Carlin today announced that they will be taking a strong five car line-up to the Suncity Group 64th Macau Grand Prix next month with the reigning Champions joined by 2017 FIA Formula Three European Champion Lando Norris, alongside regular F3 team mates Jehan Daruvala, Ferdinand Habsburg and Devlin DeFranceso; the team will be rounded off by Formula Renault 2.0 Championship leader Sacha Fenestraz. As the 2016 GP winners, Carlin looks forward to returning to the incredible venue for the 64th running of the extraordinary Macau Grand Prix.
Carlin, who emphatically won the race last year with Antonio Felix da Costa, will be joined for the prestigious event by a young but talented line-up consisting of five great drivers. Newly crowned FIA Formula Three European Champion Lando Norris will return to his Championship winning car for the event as he looks to add the blue-riband event to his already long list of growing achievements. The McLaren Young Driver, who took a total of nine wins in the European Championship on his way to clinching the crown, was on form around the tight and twisty streets last year and in only his first taste of the 3.8 mile Guia circuit managed to storm his way from the back of the grid to gain an impressive 15 places.
Joining him in the team will be his 2017 team mates Jehan Daruvala and Ferdinand Habsburg. Indian racer Daruvala enjoyed an impressive rookie season in the FIA Formula Three European Championship in which he not only took a fantastic win at Norisring but finished second overall in the rookie championship. Daruvala, who is part of the Sahara Force India Young Driver Development programme, has also taken a total of three podiums on his way to a fantastic finish.
Habsburg has also taken a supreme victory this season in the highly competitive series at historic circuit Spa-Francorchamps. The Austrian driver claimed two fastest race laps too during the course of the year to further underline his speed. Habsburg is also one of only two drivers in the Carlin line-up with prior experience of the challenging race having competed in the 63rd edition in 2016.
Taking part in two championships this season DeFrancesco adds the Macau GP to his list of achievements. A podium finisher in the Euroformula Open Championship, DeFrancesco has one more round of the season remaining in Barcelona and is currently leading the Spanish Formula Three Championship. DeFrancesco took part in the final few rounds of the 2017 FIA Formula Three season in anticipation of the Macau GP and looks forward to his first taste of the tricky circuit.
Finally, joining the team for the second time this season Fenestraz will be back in his Carlin-run Volkswagen powered Dallara Formula Three car following his debut at the Nurburgring. Fenestraz has enjoyed an enviable season to date in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup Championship and currently sits in line to take the title with a commanding lead of 52.5 points with three races left at the final round in Catalunya this weekend. Fenestraz, who has clinched six wins in the Eurocup Championship, made his debut with the team in Germany last month and impressively qualified in the top four in only his first attempt.
The five Carlin drivers are welcomed to the team for the 64th Macau Grand Prix by racing director Trevor Carlin who said, “We are thrilled to have such a strong, exciting and young line-up for the 2017 Macau Grand Prix. We’ve worked closely with Lando, Jehan, Ferdinand and Devlin all season long in their respective championships and we’re pleased to have a talent like Sacha back on board with us for Macau. I’m excited for them to all take to the track and see what they can achieve around the circuit – we have two guys [Lando and Ferdinand] who have raced here before and have experience of the tight circuit however for Jehan, Devlin and Sacha this will be an entirely new challenge and experience which they will no doubt enjoy.”
